Our admissions process includes the submission of an application and attendance on one of our tours. Our application fee is $30, and should be submitted with the application. The application can be downloaded or requested by mail by contacting the office.
The deadline to submit applications is December 1, 2011.
A tour of the school will be scheduled after the application is received. Tours will take place Friday mornings and run from October through January. During the tour you will have the opportunity to see the school, observe one of our classrooms and ask questions you may have about our program. We do not include an interview with your child in our application process.
We would like you to know about several aspects of our admissions process and program before you submit an application:
- We will likely have limited spaces to offer to incoming families in the 3′s, 3/4′s and the 4/5′s classes. We have no way of knowing at this time exactly how many current families will re-enroll in our program and to what degree these classes will be filled.
- Children enrolled in the 2′s Afternoon class will be guaranteed a spot in the following year’s 3′s Afternoon class, but admission to a morning class will only be possible after the current children attending morning classes are placed.
- When children graduate from the 2/3′s class (three mornings a week) or the 3′s Afternoon class (four mornings a week), the only option available the following year is a morning class that meets five mornings a week from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Greenhouse is affiliated with and supported by Columbia University and Columbia affiliated families are given priority admission. Greenhouse has adequate spaces for non-affiliated families as well and many children in the surrounding communities attend the program. We believe diversity is important and we strive for ethnic, racial, and gender balance in each class. All interested families are encouraged to apply.
Admission Notification, Deposit, and Payment Plans
Notifications for siblings and Columbia affiliated families will be mailed in February 2012. General notification takes place in early March. The parent reply date will be approximately two weeks after the mailing date. Notification and reply dates conform to the regulations set by the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY), of which Greenhouse is a member.
A deposit of 20% of the tuition is due when the signed contract is submitted. The deposit is part of the total tuition but nonrefundable should you withdraw from Greenhouse.
The remainder of the tuition is paid according to the selected payment plan. The three-payment plan requires payment on the 1st of June, September and January. Or the remaining tuition can be divided into six payments that are due on the 1st of June, September, October, November, December, and January. Upon request, we will arrange a nine-month payment plan.
Information About Financial Aid

A number of financial aid grants are awarded each year. Our grants are based entirely on need and cover a portion of the tuition. The monies used for financial aid are raised through the Annual Fund Appeal, the Annual Auction and Dinner and a grant from Columbia University designated for financial aid.
While many factors affect a family’s eligibility for financial aid, the expectation is that ten percent of a family’s income be designated for tuition. Enrolled families need to apply for financial aid for each new school year and each subsequent award will reflect any change in the family’s finances or the cost of the tuition. Each family’s data is carefully considered and treated confidentially.
If you would like to apply for financial aid, please submit the following:
- The Application for Financial Aid (a version is available for downloading or you can contact the office for an application)
- A copy of the Federal Income Tax Return (Form 1040) for the 2010 tax year
- A copy of W-2 form(s) for the 2011 tax year
- By April 30, 2012 a copy of the Form1040 for the 2011 tax year
Families are informed of financial aid awards at the same time that notifications of acceptance are made.
The financial aid form is due by January 15, 2012.
